Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane’s name was trending on Tuesday night, and we bet he hoped it was for different reasons. During the game between his Oilers and the Lightning in Tampa Bay, Kane suffered a deep gash in his wrist that forced him to get emergency surgery.

This is what happened. In the second period, Kane fell to the ice after getting tangled up with Lightning defenceman Philippe Myers. Once down, he couldn’t move when forward Pat Maroon accidentally skated over his wrist. Right away, Kane frantically skated to his team’s bench to get to the room and the help of paramedics and doctors. There was a visible pool of blood on the ice, and players from both benches were shaken by the incident.

After the game, Sportsnet’s Gene Principe revealed how Lightning head coach Jon Cooper immediately headed to the Oilers’ dressing room to get an update on Kane after a heartbreaking loss.

Edmonton got the 3-2 win, but the Bolts almost got to tie things up late in the third period, but Maroon’s goal was overturned.

Despite losing to the rival club, Cooper knows that life is more important than hockey and wanted to make sure Kane was stable and out of danger.

“You cringe when you see that,” Cooper said after the game. “It was tough to see. Hopefully he’s going to be OK because you know, hockey, you battle against each other. It’s a war (but) we’re still a family.”

You gotta love this classy move by the head coach, who probably relayed the information to his players.

On Wednesday morning, Kane provided an update on his condition as he now focuses on his recovery.
