On Wednesday, a heartbreaking update on Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price was provided by The Athletic after he told them that he does not feel close to returning. Price suffered a training setback and is likely to miss the entire 2022-23 season, if he isn’t forced to retire and end a 15-season NHL career. Last season, Price did return to action in April for just five games, after missing the entire 2021-22 season up until that point upon checking himself into the NHL’s Player Assistance Program, as well as rehabilitating from offseason surgery. For his combined efforts, Price was awarded the Bill Masteron Trophy for his perseverance and dedication to hockey. But unfortunately, it’s been looking like Price’s career could be over…
With Price’s future uncertain, the Canadiens signed Jake Allen to a two-year, $7.7 million extension earlier this month, but they miss Price’s talent in between the pipes.
And the Habs aren’t the only ones.
Ahead of tonight’s season opener between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Canadiens in Montreal, forward Mitch Marner pulled a classy move when asked about the absence of Carey Price, saying: “The game misses him.”
Marner couldn’t be more right. While the Maple Leafs’ forward still struggled more than once to beat Price in net, he knows how talented he is and how a void is left with him injured and out of the game…
We know Marner will bring it on the ice later tonight and will attempt to beat Allen in net, but it’s a very classy move for him to speak about Price and give out this classy comment on a fallen colleague.
