The Senators sustained a big blow this offseason with the departure of star forward Alex DeBrincat, who was traded earlier this month to the Detroit Red Wings, leaving a bitter taste in Ottawa. Forward Claude Giroux was a guest on TSN 1200 on Wednesday morning and sounded off on the changes that have come to his roster. He believes the trade of DeBrincat is best for the team’s future.
When DeBrincat was traded to Ottawa on the Draft floor in the summer of 2022, fans quickly got excited, but there was immediately a sense that the star forward would not commit to the Senators. He refused to make a long-term commitment with the Sens, which led to the recent move to the Wings, with whom he inked a new contract.
Giroux sounded off on the decision and admitted how disappointed he was, though he prefers to move on.
“We kind of saw it coming. It was his decision and we all enjoyed playing with Alex. He didn’t want to be here, he didn’t see himself here for the next eight years so,” Giroux commented on TSN 1200. “That’s the business side of hockey that’s not really fun, but it is what it is. Now we’re going to move on.”
Giroux tells it like it is and now wants to focus on what’s to come in Ottawa. Despite the loss of some teammates, he believes the Senators have strong pieces in place to bring Ottawa back to playoff contention for the first time since 2017.
He looks forward to the upcoming season despite seeing DeBrincat with an Eastern rival.
