Claude Giroux furious after NHL officials call a penalty on the wrong team.
The Flyers captain was not happy.
You don't often see Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux get overly animated, so when he's being adamant about a complaint on the ice you can often count on the fact that he might have a legitimate gripe.
On Saturday night we got to witness an animated Giroux during the third period of a game between the Flyers and the Boston Bruins. This time around Giroux was furious about a call that came relatively late in the game, and more importantly one that came at a critical moment as the Flyers were on the power play.
This wasn't your typical bad call either, but instead was one of those scenarios where the right penalty is called but on the wrong team. During a face off against Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron, Giroux was called for a faceoff violation that he clearly did not commit. The official was upset that one of the two centremen had knocked the puck out of his hand before he ever even had a chance to drop it but, in spite of the fact that he had a 50/50 shot at nailing the culprit, he attributed the infraction to the wrong player.
Here's a look at it in slow motion:
Giroux was not pleased with the call and he protested and the officials signaled for a Flyer to enter the penalty box, but his protests fell on deaf ears. I don't think anyone is going to have trouble relating to Giroux in this one instance and I would even include Bruins fans, who have themselves too often been burned by a bad call from a league official on the ice, in that group.
What made this call a particularly bad one however was the context of it all. As I already mentioned the Flyers were on a power play but a key detail in this is that they were also facing a 2 goal deficit. Instead of being awarded a two man advantage for a full 2 minutes, the Flyers had to watch as the officials negated their power play with the call.
