A few weeks before yesterday’s trade deadline, Minnesota Wild head coach Bruce Boudreau had guaranteed that his team would make the postseason. A day later, team general manager Paul Fenton made it clear that he had gotten the green light to make trades ahead of the deadline, even if it means that the Wild will fall out of playoff contention.

On Monday, the Wild traded forward Mikael Granlund to the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Kevin Fiala. A trade to a division rival that seems to hurt, not just the roster in Minnesota, but the head coach himself.

Before Tuesday night’s action, the Wild remained in the last playoff spot, clinging on to the last Wild Card slot with 66 points. Tonight, they will be facing the Winnipeg Jets, who loaded up during the trade deadline. And let’s remind you that Fenton also traded  Matt Hendricks  to the Jets… just because.

When asked about his lineup for the game, Boudreau revealed that Fiala would slide into Granlund’s spot on the power play. And then, he added a line that was clearly directed at his own general manager, per team insider Michael Russo of The Athletic

“We’ll see “if the hype is true.”

The Wild and the Jets had two very different deadlines and we will see tonight who will be able to come out on top…
