It’s been nearly two weeks since Edmonton Oilers forward Colby Cave passed away after suffering a brain hemorrhage. The 25 year old was rushed to hospital last week and placed under a medical-induced coma. After an emergency brain surgery to remove a tumour there was hope that Cave might recover. Heartbreakingly though, he passed away on Saturday, April 11th.

Cave’s love of his life and his wife of just nine months Emily still hasn’t been given access to her husband’s remains as restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented her from doing so. Meanwhile though, Emily opened up to Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic and shared some truly heartbreaking details of the life that her and her husband had planned.

Check out some of these quotes from Nugent-Bowman’s article below:

Before Colby’s tragic death at age 25 on April 11, the result of complications from a brain cyst, the couple had been planning a trip to Haiti in the hopes of starting the process of adopting a child
“We had a saying: ‘Be somebody that makes everybody feel like a somebody,’” Emily said. “We always wanted to help. That’s the one thing about our relationship – we brought the best out of each other.”
Emily, 26, had dreams of having three children – two of her own and one adopted from Haiti – long before she and Colby got married last July.
The idea to adopt a child from the country was inspired by her father, who did a lot of work at an orphanage and a missionary compound there. Colby, selfless and supportive, was all-in when she told him of her vision.
The plan was to give birth to a baby first and then adopt a child of the opposite gender before having a third. The process of adopting in Haiti is a years-long procedure, filled with rules and regulations, so they wanted get things moving.
Emily had a flight booked to Haiti in November but had to cancel it when Colby was demoted from the Oilers to AHL Bakersfield. He felt terrible.
“Instead of celebrating our first anniversary, we thought, ‘Let’s go back and see if we find a kid that we’d love to be a part of our family,’” she said. “Unfortunately, we won’t be doing that.”
