The young Habs superstars make their allegiances known.
News of former Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk demanding and receiving a trade this past weekend has the entire hockey world speculating far and wide.
Senators GM Steve Staios told the media that he believes Tkachuck was never the same player for his team following the 2026 Olympics and that he there may be a movement of American players seeking to return to their home country.
Of course, the Vancouver Canucks experienced a similar situation with former captain Quinn Hughes. Hughes reportedly told the team that he had no interest in re-signing with the Canucks and that he intending on signing with an American team once his contract with the team was set to expire in 2027. Now there are rumors that Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is also seeking a trade to the United States. Ditto for Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews.
So... what about Montreal Canadiens stars Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson? They're both proud Americans of course, but they were notable snubs from Team America's Olympic roster.
So... again, what are their intentions? Are they seeking a move down South, as well?
Habs insider Marco D'Amico reports today that neither player is seeking a trade and that they have informed him that that are both "very happy" and "see a winner in the making" in Montreal.
From D'Amico:
Here's the thing... I believe both Caufield and Hutson, but things change quickly. We've seen that in Vancouver and now we've seen it in Ottawa. Don't be surprised if Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal find themselves in a similar situation.
