Columbus Crew (Soccer) pays tribute to Johnny Gaudreau.
The Columbus Crew organize a beautiful and impromptu tribute for Johnny Gaudreau.
I'm sure that, like me, many of you have found it impossible to not feel heartbroken at the sudden and tragic loss of Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau, but if there is one thing that has given me a small measure of comfort over the weekend it has been the frankly unbelievable amount of love and support being directed at Johnny, Matthew, and perhaps most importantly of all the Gaudreau family as a whole.
On Saturday we were treated to another beautiful example when the Major League Soccer's inaugural franchise, the Columbus Crew, paid a special tribute to Johnny and did so in really exceptional fashion.
In honor of Johnny the Crew asked for a moment of silence at the 13 minute mark of the game, and it was a truly incredible sight to behold. The crowd which had been loud and rowdy just seconds earlier fell to a silent hush, with several fans holding up one of Johnny's jerseys during the moment.
Even those who didn't come to the game with a jersey ready and in hand found a creative way to honor Johnny, holding up a single finger in one hand and three fingers in the other, making the number 13 in tribute to the number Johnny wore during his NHL career.
While it will likely do little to diminish the loss that the Gaudreau family is currently experiencing, I hope it brings them some small comfort to see their sons on the receiving end of so much love from the sporting community.
