Community stunned by mysterious death of 22-year-old hockey star

The hockey world in Ontario is grieving after the sudden and unexpected loss of Dawson Abrahams, a 22-year-old player from St. Catharines who passed away peacefully in his sleep last week under mysterious circumstances. So young, gone far too soon, with very little details on what could have happened.

Beyond the stat lines and accolades, those who knew him say the young man's impact reached far deeper than the rink.

Abrahams was a student at Redeemer University, where he was working toward a degree in Physical Education while starring for the Royals men's hockey team. In his most recent season, he earned the program's Men's Hockey Rookie of the Year award after tallying 10 goals and 27 points across just 18 games, all while serving as an assistant captain.

His hockey resume stretched back through several Ontario programs, including the St. Catharines Falcons, Niagara North Stars, Southern Tier Admirals, Welland Jr. Canadians, and Pelham Panthers. Coaches, teammates, and opponents alike reportedly respected him for his leadership, humility, and sportsmanship.

According to his family's announcement, Abrahams is survived by his parents Derek and Sue Abrahams, his sister Rachel and brother-in-law Brandon Fehderau, and his nephew Walter. He was predeceased by his sister Brooke. A large extended family and wide circle of friends are also left to mourn his loss.

Those close to Abrahams described a young man whose faith shaped every part of his life. He spent time at Portantorchas in Costa Rica, led Bible studies, and devoted summers to Camp Crossroads, a place his family says held deep meaning for him. He was reportedly spending his final days at the camp doing what he loved most.

A visitation has been scheduled for Friday, July 31st, at Central Community in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. A funeral service celebrating his life will follow on Saturday, August 1st, at the same location.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be directed to Camp Crossroads in Dawson's honour.

Online tributes have poured in from across the hockey community, with many expressing shock and heartbreak at the loss of someone so young. One commenter captured the collective sentiment simply: "Way too young."
