Conflicting reports on new 8 year Leon Draisaitl contract

UPDATE: Following a mass of online speculation, Bob Stauffer has now clarified his report on Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl and his impending new contract. Initially, Stauffer reported on Edmonton's 630 CHED radio that Draisaitl and the Oilers were expected to announce an 8 year contract extension, but now Stauffer is pulling back on that report a bit.

"My guess is they'll probably get the deal done... I did not say the Edmonton Oilers would sign Leon Draisaitl to an 8 year deal. I said I could envision the Draisaitl camp wanting the max term length and it makes sense for me and my guess is that they'll probably get the deal done," Stauffer is now reporting. "Doesn't mean that it's getting done in the next couple days. It's my belief that there's a path to a 7 or 8 year deal that makes way more sense than a 5 year deal. Time will tell."

So... deal or no deal?

Again, Stauffer isn't one to deal in misinformation so when he reports something it's generally pretty accurate. I wouldn't be surprised if indeed the wheels are in motion behind the scenes and that both sides are working towards a long-term agreement. As Stauffer says, time will tell.

Read below for our earlier report on this developing story.

According to a report from Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer, the Oilers and superstar forward Leon Draisaitl are working on a contract extension that would see Draisaitl remain in Edmonton for a long, long time.

On Edmonton's 630 CHED radio station yesterday Stauffer reported that he had been in contact with Draisaitl's agent (former NHL goaltender Mike Liut) and that the two sides are working on, "a 7 or 8-year deal. It’s probably going to be an 8-year deal realistically.”

Other unverified reports indicate that Draisaitl is signing an eight year deal worth $13.5 million per season.

No official confirmation of the term or dollar amount of this contract, but it's worth noting that Stauffer is a very connected Oilers insider. He doesn't peddle in misinformation and when he reports something it's generally a rock solid source. Still, we'll wait until this report picks up traction before we can start reporting on a done deal.

Stay tuned, Oilers fans. If in fact Draisaitl commits long-term to Edmonton, it should bode very well for captain Connor McDavid's future in the city as well.
