Connor Bedard weighs in on Patrick Kane's signing in Detroit

In case you missed the news earlier today, the Detroit Red Wings have reportedly signed superstar free agent Patrick Kane.

From TSN insider Chris Johnston:

Multiple other insiders and media sources are reporting on the signing, as well. So far though, there are no firm details about Kane's salary on his new contract. We do know that it's a one year deal for the rest of the 2023-24 campaign though.

Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic are both reporting that it's a one year, $2.75 million deal for Kane.

It's believed that Kane also had offers from the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins and his hometown Buffalo Sabres. According to Seravalli, Yzerman distanced himself from the pack by meeting with Kane face to face when Kane was in Toronto recovering from his hip surgery.

It's obvious to me that Kane was looking to be reunited with good friend Alex DeBrincat, a player who Kane developed tremendous chemistry with during their time together on the Blackhawks. Look, he tried re-igniting the flame with Artemi Panarin on the New York Rangers and now he's trying it again with DeBrincat on the Red Wings. 

Interestingly enough, Blackhawks rookie Connor Bedard was asked for his reaction on the Kane signing earlier today and, like most Blackhawks fans, he's just excited to see Kaner and Cat reunited.

"It's cool that he and DeBrincat will be back together. I'm sure they'll be a pretty exciting duo, so excited to watch.

"He's (Kane) huge. He's obviously one of the best players to ever play. Growing up being able to watch him, I mean the stuff he'd do on a nightly basis (was) pretty remarkable. A magician, obviously."

Yeah, it'll be cool to see old friends reunited and all, but to me this signing reeks a little bit of desperation from the Red Wings and GM Steve Yzerman. The Red Wings are a much improved team this season, but with a seven year playoff drought in Motor City, you can't blame Yzerman for getting a bit antsy. He made several free agent additions this past offseason and now by signing Kane, he's showing the team's fanbase that the time is NOW to get back into the playoffs. Whether it pays off or not, remains to be seen. The Red Wings have cooled lately after a red hot start, here's hoping that Kane can inject some life back into their offense.
