Connor Hellebuyck now faces nightmare scenario in latest holdout update

New developments are adding another layer of uncertainty to the star goaltender’s standoff with Winnipeg, and the situation could get even messier.

The Connor Hellebuyck holdout in Winnipeg was already one of the most dramatic storylines heading into the 2026-27 NHL season. Now it has taken a turn that could make things exponentially more uncomfortable for everyone involved.

According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, speaking on both the Barn Burner podcast and the Hello Hockey show, word has been circulating that the three-time Vezina Trophy winner may be reconsidering his position. Hellebuyck reportedly expected a trade to materialize well before training camp, or at least during it, and that simply never happened.

Plus, a fan-created website has been tracking the salary Hellebuyck is losing in real time while suspended by the team for not honouring his contract.

"You start to see the paychecks aren't coming in, and the family's saying, 'What's going on?', and everything starts to mount," Pagnotta said. "It's tough on ya."

Elliotte Friedman echoed the growing sentiment on his 32 Thoughts podcast, noting that conversations about a possible Hellebuyck return are picking up steam. But Friedman was candid about one uncomfortable truth: essentially nobody wants it to happen.

As Steve Werier has been pointing out, the locker room dynamic is where this gets especially messy. The resentment reportedly stems from Hellebuyck's public comments after last season, when he essentially told the hockey world that the Jets were not good enough to compete for the Stanley Cup. That kind of statement does not simply evaporate when you walk back through the door. As time passes (and salary is forfeited), it’s becoming more likely that Hellebuyck may consider a new strategy.

However, this could mean many difficult scenarios: returning to a bitter, angry dressing room, staying on the sidelines with no salary, perhaps for much longer than anticipated, or being dealt somewhere he never wanted to go in the first place…

Meanwhile, Winnipeg has been building real chemistry without him. Kyle Connor has been electric with seven goals, and Stuart Skinner has posted a .917 save percentage between the pipes.

The trade market has not been kind either, and reported offers have been underwhelming. Carolina, Buffalo, and Utah have been mentioned as potential suitors, with San Jose as a dark horse. But complications abound, including no-trade list issues involving Buffalo's goalies and financial constraints that reportedly rule out the Rangers.

There is also a looming legal precedent. The Alexei Yashin situation in 1999-2000, in which an arbitrator ruled that the player still owed Ottawa the final year of his contract after sitting out an entire season, could apply here. If Hellebuyck stays away all year, he might still be under contract with Winnipeg next season.

Every passing day shifts the leverage in ways that remain unclear, and the most awkward scenario of all, Hellebuyck walking back into a room that has already moved on, grows more likely with each forfeited paycheck.
