The superstar goaltender remains at the center of offseason speculation after a significant deal fell apart.
The Connor Hellebuyck trade saga isn’t over. The Winnipeg Jets goaltender remains one of the biggest names to watch this offseason, and despite a blockbuster deal falling apart before the NHL Draft, there is growing belief that a move is still coming.
According to Winnipeg Free Press columnist Mike McIntyre, the odds of Hellebuyck being traded this summer are “somewhere north of 95 per cent.” While the timing and destination remain unclear, McIntyre believes the Buffalo Sabres remain the most logical landing spot for the three-time Vezina Trophy winner.
The two sides already appeared to be close.
Reports indicated that Winnipeg and Buffalo had a framework for a Hellebuyck trade in place before the opening round of draft weekend. The deal ultimately collapsed, with the return package becoming the major sticking point. However, some around the league believe Hellebuyck would still be willing to waive his no-movement clause to join the Sabres if the two organizations can find common ground.
Buffalo’s need is obvious. The Sabres have been searching for stability in net and have been aggressive in trying to accelerate their timeline. Landing a proven superstar like Hellebuyck would immediately change the outlook of the franchise.
One complication in the previous talks reportedly involved Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. The Buffalo goaltender was rumored to be part of the package heading back to Winnipeg, but his five-team no-trade list may have created another obstacle if the Jets were among the teams he could block.
For Winnipeg, patience remains an option. Hellebuyck still has five years remaining on his contract, giving general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff significant leverage to wait for the right offer.
But the Jets’ actions suggest change is coming. After losing backup Eric Comrie, Winnipeg signed former Edmonton Oilers starter Stuart Skinner to a two-year contract, adding another clue that the team may be preparing for life after its franchise goaltender.
Whether Buffalo finally gets its star netminder or another contender steps forward, one thing appears increasingly clear: Connor Hellebuyck’s time in Winnipeg may be running out.
