As soon as Auston Matthews signed a four-year, $53 million extension that ties him to the Toronto Maple Leafs through the 2027-28 season, the focused shifted to Connor McDavid and his desire to stay put in Edmonton. The Oilers’ captain was asked to react to Matthews’ contract, which led to questions about his future contract negotiations with the team that selected him first overall in 2015.

“It’s three years down the road,” McDavid told Sportsnet’s Mark Spector. “We’ve got to see where our lives are at and kind of go from there. I don’t say that to raise eyebrows or cause panic. It’s just the way that it is…But I love playing in Edmonton. I’m 100 percent committed to winning in Edmonton with this group.”

Adam Proteau of the Hockey News tells it like it is:

“Ideally, Edmonton brass would love to have McDavid announce he’s eternally devoted to the Oilers, but McDavid was being realistic, as all kinds of things could happen that change his perspective and interest in remaining in northern Alberta. And his comment about loving playing in Edmonton is about as good as it gets.”

Don’t expect more from the superstar forward, who is now solely focused on winning the Stanley Cup in the near future.

However, it is clear that if McDavid cannot become a champion with the Oilers, his decision to stay in Edmonton and sign a contract extension with the club in 2026 could be quite different than Matthews’…
