Connor McDavid Could Leave the Oilers Much Sooner Than Anyone Expected

The nightmare scenario for Edmonton Oilers fans may be closer to reality than they ever imagined. According to a prominent NHL insider, Connor McDavid — widely regarded as the best hockey player on the planet — could potentially ask to leave the organization well before his contract expires in 2028.

Just last summer, McDavid provided a massive sigh of relief for the Oilers faithful when he agreed to a two-year contract extension. Not only did he commit to staying, but he also left significant money on the table to give general manager Stan Bowman the salary cap flexibility needed to build a Stanley Cup contender around him. It was seen as the ultimate team-first gesture from a generational talent.

Bowman's Controversial Moves Are Raising Red Flags

However, the front office decisions that followed have been far from universally praised. Bowman has made several controversial acquisitions that have yet to pay dividends. Perhaps the most glaring example is the trade that sent goaltender Stuart Skinner — a fan favorite who was beloved by his teammates in the locker room — to Pittsburgh in exchange for Tristan Jarry. Since arriving in Edmonton, Jarry has posted the worst statistics among all starting goaltenders in the league and reportedly hasn't meshed well with his new teammates either.

These questionable roster moves have created a growing sense of unease around the franchise. McDavid sacrificed earnings specifically so the team could improve, and if those improvements fail to materialize into postseason success, his patience could run thin far sooner than expected.

What Could Trigger an Early Departure

Journalist and insider Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic revealed during an appearance on the Sick Podcast that an early playoff elimination this spring could be the catalyst for a seismic shift. According to LeBrun, if the Oilers are bounced from the postseason prematurely, McDavid could request a trade as soon as the summer of 2027. In that scenario, Edmonton's management would have little choice but to accommodate the request rather than risk losing him for nothing when his deal expires.

That means next season could realistically be McDavid's final campaign in an Oilers jersey. The 29-year-old center has been nothing short of spectacular this year, recording 37 goals and 77 assists for 114 points through 68 games. He carries an average annual salary of $12.5 million, and should he become available, the bidding war would be unlike anything the NHL has seen in years. Countless teams across the league — including the Montreal Canadiens — would undoubtedly line up for the chance to acquire the former first overall pick from the 2015 draft. For now, all eyes are on Edmonton's playoff performance, which may ultimately determine whether McDavid stays or goes.
