The Edmonton Oilers captain has just been dethroned as the fastest skater on his team.

Now you may be thinking to yourself, wait a minute it's not time for the National Hockey League's skill competitions just yet, and you would be correct. However each and every season the Edmonton Oilers put on a show for their fans in the form of their very own skills competition and some of the events are strikingly similar to the ones that you would see featured during the NHL All Star Game festivities. Now normally the event is rather uneventful in the grand scheme of things, although everyone always has a good time, but this time around the event provided an eyebrow raising surprise that has a lot of fans chattering after the fact.

You see Oilers superstar forward Connor McDavid is widely recognized as the fastest skater on his team, and one of the fastest skaters in the entire National Hockey League in fact, and has consistently won the fastest skater competition time and time again. So given these facts it would stand to reason that McDavid would once again prove to be the fastest skater at today's event, and for that reason the Oilers had him going last. The expectation was that McDavid would pull off the fastest time and be declared the winner but to everyone's surprise, and to the delight of teammate Leon Draisaitl, his time actually proved to be a fraction of a second slower than that of one of his teammates.

That teammate? Joakim Nygard

If you would like to see the competition you can check it out in the video below, and if you just wanna see McDavid's attempt you can skip ahead to the 6:50 mark in the video.
