The Edmonton Oilers have not had the best start to the 2023-24 National Hockey League regular season and the last thing they needed was an injury to one of their key players.

Unfortunately for the Oilers that appears to be exactly what they got on Saturday night when Oilers captain Connor McDavid appeared to suffer an injury in the closing minutes of regulation. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, McDavid suffered some kind of discomfort on his left side, above his hip, and it was severe enough that the Oilers star forward remained glued to the bench in the final minutes of regulation as well as overtime.

It is unclear what caused the injury, but you can see McDavid favoring his left side as he skates up the ice in this short clip from the final minutes of the third period.

As you might expect this was the first question on the mind of many Oilers fans following the game, but unfortunately when he was pressed on the issue Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft didn't have much information to offer. Woodcroft did indicate that he believes it was some type of muscle issue, but admitted he wouldn't have more details until later on Sunday.

"I didn't walk back there yet but it looked to be more muscular. I'll have an update tomorrow."

This is of course a major concern for the Oilers moving forward, stay tuned for updates later today.
