Connor McDavid pumps up his new goalie Jack Campbell
“If he can be the starting goalie for the Leafs, he can be the starting goalie anywhere”

Former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell finally got to meet some of his new teammates this past weekend at a charity golf tournament in Toronto with Zach Hyman, Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse all in attendance, amongst others.
McDavid, hockey's uncontested, undisputed MVP, spoke highly of his new goaltender giving him the "I he can make it here, he can make it anywhere" endorsement. "If he can be the starting goalie for the Leafs, he can be the starting goalie anywhere," McDavid told TSN reporters who were in attendance.
"Obviously, this is the hockey hotbed and there's a tremendous amount of pressure on whoever fills that net," McDavid continued. "He's occupied that job for the better part of two years and he's done a great job doing it, so I'm sure he'll transition smoothly."
The thing is... Campbell wasn't exactly the #1 starting goalie for the Leafs that McDavid is making him out to be. He was great for stretches, then inconsistent for stretches, then outright bad for stretches. Now, having said all that he put up a remarkable 48-12-8 record and .916 save percentage over 71 games in the last two seasons with the Leafs. If the Oilers get goaltending anything close to that, they'll be in absolute love with Campbell and his contract. The team, of course, is coming off of years of the Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen tandem so almost anything GM Ken Holland did to address the goaltending position this offseason was going to be seen as improvement. So, in all fairness, Campbell is an improvement.
