McDavid answers a tough question about his former teammate.
The Edmonton Oilers shocked their fans this past week when they finally made the decision to move on from longtime goaltender Stuart Skinner.
Skinner had been a polarizing figure in Edmonton for quite some time despite leading his team to back to back Stanley Cup Finals, with many fans in Edmonton seemingly believing that their team would have had a better fate in those finals with a different goaltender.
Skinner was having another shaky season which led to calls from fans to make a trade, with Skinner recording a 2.83 goals against average and a .891 save percentage over 24 games this season. While fans may have been happy to see Skinner go, there remained a question about how his now former teammates viewed the trade.
Over the weekend, Oilers star forward Connor McDavid was asked a pretty tough question when he was asked what Skinner's legacy should be in the City of Edmonton and his answer left little doubt about how he felt towards Stuart Skinner.
"I think he should be remembered for leading the way to two Cup Finals," said McDavid sticking up for his former teammate. "Two exciting runs that he backstopped."
McDavid didn't just compliment Skinner for his effort on the ice, but also made sure to highlight the quality of the man as well.
"He was a good person while he was here," said McDavid. "Always treated people well and that's important."
While Skinner's reputation may have taken a severe beating in the City of Edmonton due to his questionable play at times, it seems safe to say that his teammates will remember him fondly for what he helped them accomplish and how he treated them along the way.
Skinner has yet to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins since the trade but his replacement, Tristan Jarry, has suited up in his first game for the Oilers and he recorded similar numbers with a 3.00 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.
