Connor McDavid’s past haunts him when facing backlash for Oilers’ disastrous home opener
Wonder if this all made the Oilers’ captain regret ever taking part in the NHL documentary….
It’s been trending for weeks now as most of us have seen the clip from the Amazon Prime’s new documentary series Faceoff in which Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid flips out at his teammates and drops many F-bombs in his intense speech during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers. We can clearly hear McDavid yelling at his teammates in the viral video:
“It’s the f–king final! Dig. The f–k. In. Right f–king now!”
On Wednesday during the Oilers’ home opener however, McDavid’s intensity appeared to be missing as Edmonton were badly beaten 6-0 by the Winnipeg Jets. Fans took to social media to joke about the blowout loss and probably made the Oilers’ captain regret ever taking part in the NHL documentary.
Using different memes and images from the viral video of McDavid ripping into his teammates in the dressing room, fans made fun of the superstar, wondering where his passion had gone for his club’s first game of the 2024-25 campaign. Others used some of the quotes heard from McDavid in the clip to mock the captain:
One even used an image from a sobbing McDavid, which was caught after Game 7 of the Finals when the Oilers were just one goal away from winning the championship.
When the Amazon documentary series came out last month, McDavid admitted that he never looked to be a star in the program, though cameras ended up catching his most vulnerable moments.
“It was never my plan to be the star of the show,” McDavid previously said. “I think we wanted to dip our toe in but … here we are. Head first off the diving board.”
On Wednesday, it was the entire NHL fanbase who caught his most vulnerable moment of the 2024-25 season so far. We will see if the jokes and mockeries will be an additional motivation for Edmonton to get back on track.
