Connor McDavid sparks major scare at Oilers camp after brutal collision

Edmonton's training camp was supposed to be about building momentum heading into the new season. But a pair of concerning injury scares on Friday turned the mood at practice decidedly tense.

The biggest scare involved Connor McDavid, who was driven hard into the net by Shakir Mukhamadullin during a camp session. According to TSN's Ryan Rishaug, McDavid appeared to be favoring his arm after getting up from the collision, and the arena reportedly went quiet in the immediate aftermath.

McDavid, however, did not leave the ice. He went on to convert a penalty shot and continued participating in the session, which should provide at least some reassurance for an Oilers fanbase that was understandably rattled by the sight of their captain in any kind of discomfort.

That wasn't the only concerning moment of the day, though.

Earlier in the session, forward Jason Dickinson appeared to hurt himself after smashing his stick against the boards. Reporter Janson Duench noted that Dickinson looked like he was in pain as he came off the ice. He did eventually return to practice, but was replaced in the scrimmage portion by Owen Michaels, who slotted in between Kasperi Kapanen and Trent Frederic on what had been Dickinson's line.

The severity of both situations remains unclear, and no official updates from the team have been reported as of yet. Head coach Mike Babcock only revealed that he did not expect Dickinson to miss time, though the team is monitoring the situation.

“We knew he wasn’t scrimaging today. We just knew that before. … We’re just monitoring that.”

McDavid staying on the ice is an encouraging sign, though the fact that Dickinson was pulled from the scrimmage lineup could suggest something worse.

All eyes will be on the next practice session in Edmonton to see whether McDavid and Dickinson are full participants or if either player requires further evaluation. With the regular season approaching, the Oilers can ill afford any significant absences from a roster built to contend.
