Two of the biggest stars in the National Hockey League may be leading the charge in what appears to be a coordinated offensive against the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

On Sunday, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid spoke out against Player Safety in comments that appeared to show support for Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews. Matthews was recently on the receiving end of a season ending injury courtesy of a dirty knee on knee hit from Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas, a repeat offender, with Gudas getting off with only a 5 game suspension despite costing Matthews the rest of the season.

McDavid, who obviously does not play for the Maple Leafs, was highly critical of Player Safety in his comments despite saying they've done their best.

"That being said I think that there is reason to take a look at how the whole process works," said McDavid on Sunday. "If every time there is a suspension everybody complains about it well, why don’t we take a look at the process and figure out if there’s a better way to make sure that both parties are happy because it seems like there’s a lot of frustration there."

The timing of McDavid's comments caught the attention of many including former NHL player Nick Kypreos. On Sunday night Kypreos asked NHL insider Elliotte Friedman if this could be a coordinated effort on the part of both McDavid and Matthews, who are both represented by the same agent in Judd Moldaver, and the answer was very interesting indeed.

"It's coordinated Nick, these things don't happen by accident," confirmed Friedman on Sunday night.

McDavid and Matthews are two of the most influential players in the sport, players who drive millions in revenue for the league, and it will be very interesting to see if this leads to meaningful change in Player Safety.
