Corey Perry and Joe Veleno drop the gloves on Sunday night.
Oilers veteran Corey Perry takes on a much younger man in Red Wings forward Joe Veleno.
Things got heated in the first period between the Detroit Red Wings and the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.
The fireworks started after former Red Wings first round pick Joe Veleno laid a hit on Oilers forward Derek Ryan, a hit that just about everyone on the Oilers roster appeared to take exception to. The hit did appear to catch Ryan from behind and Ryan looked towards the officials for a call, which wasn't forthcoming.
Instead it would fall to Oilers veteran forward Corey Perry to dole out the punishment, but initially Veleno refused to engage with Perry and simply skated away.
It wouldn't be long before the showdown would happen however, with Perry again challenging Veleno on his very next shift and this time Veleno would accept.
Veleno looked like he was getting the best of the veteran in the early going, but once Perry adjusted he landed a series of nasty looking uppercuts and appeared to get the better of the offense from that point forward.
Both men had their moments however and it was a pretty good exchange overall, one that had the crowd roaring in satisfaction.
