Tough to hear from the veteran forward. Watch below:
This past season, veteran forward Corey Perry was once again a key part of helping the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final for the second-consecutive season, scoring 10 goals and 14 points in 22 postseason games. He scored 19 goals and 30 points in 81 games last season, his second in Edmonton. But, once again, he didn’t get to hoist the Stanley Cup.
When asked about his unfortunate record, Perry, who has now lost in each of his last five Stanley Cup Final appearances, just looked heartbroken. Media members wanted to know how he felt during his exit interview on Thursday, and his answer just pulls at your heart’s strings.
”It’s devastating. It doesn’t feel real.”
Last year, Perry became the first player to lose at that stage with four different teams. He lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021 as a member of the Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens, respectively. He then signed with the Bolts, but came up short against the Colorado Avalanche in 2022.
Now, he has lost in consecutive seasons with the Oilers against the Florida Panthers.
Perry still has a ring, having captured one in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks, but you just know he would love to add another championship before hanging up the skates, and losing it leaves irreparable damage.
The 40-year-old also addressed what he hopes for the future, and revealed how he would love to stay with the Oilers.
“I would love to stay here. I’ll let the higher ups do the rest of the talking but I thought I went out and left everything on the ice, everything I could give,” Perry said. “We’ll see where it goes and hopefully we’re back”
I don’t see why Edmonton would not want him back. He was an effective forward in the postseason as well, posting 10 goals and 4 assists over 22 games.
For now, he’s already dealing with heartbreak, let’s see if he’ll be able to celebrate a new deal with the Oilers later on this summer.
