Corey Perry reveals what he told his teammates to spark overtime comeback

The Oilers know that when Perry speaks, you do what he tells you. Here is what Perry had to say, down below:

Edmonton Oilers veteran forward Corey Perry is the true hero of last night’s Game 4 overtime win over the Florida Panthers. Perry is the one who stepped up and spoke to the entire dressing room after the disastrous first period where they trailed by three goals.

In the second frame, the Oilers scored three goals of their own to erase the deficit and took the lead in the last period with the Cats scoring in the final seconds of regulation to send another game to overtime.

Perry was on the ice during the game winning goal by Leon Draisaitl. He was able to immediately feel the impact of his speech on the rest of the team and earning the victory, tying the series at 2-2.

After the contest, none of his teammates wanted to share what Perry had to say in the dressing room.

“I’m not going to share exactly what he said right now, but the message is that he’s been in these moments,” Leon Draisaitl said. “He’s not a guy that speaks up or yells at guys all the time. That’s not his character. So, when a guy like that, with that many games, that much experience — he’s won everything there is to win; he knows how to win — when he speaks up, you listen.”

However, on Friday morning, Perry spoke with Sportsnet’s Luke Fox and spoke about his speech that sparked the impressive Oilers’ comeback.

“It wasn’t wisdom. It was just honesty,” Perry explained to reporters Friday morning in Fort Lauderdale before chartering home for Game 5. “I mean, just had to realize where we were at the moment and just kind of look ourselves in the mirror and how we were playing, what we were doing. It’s pretty much all it was.”

Last postseason when the Oilers were down against the Panthers, it was Connor McDavid, who was caught on video by Amazon, who yelled at his teammates to dig in.

Thanks to his speech, Perry led the way to the greatest single-game comeback in a Cup Final game in 106 years.

Perry has the experience to speak up in order to spark a comeback win. In his 20 NHL seasons, he has played in six separate Stanley Cup Finals. Despite that, he has only won one Stanley Cup, which came with the Anaheim Ducks back in 2007. Five of those six Final appearences have come within the last six years, which he has lost each time.

He wants a different outcome this time around and I’m sure that came out quite clear in his comeback speech.
