This just in, town council in Tempe, Arizona have voted to send the Arizona Coyotes' proposed new arena deal to a public referendum to be held in May, 2023. In short, it will be up to the residents of Tempe to decide the Coyotes' future.

From Chierstin Susel of Phoenix Sports:

It's important to note that the arena and complex in question will be 100% funded by private entities and will not require tax payer money, which would certainly be a non-starter for most residents I would imagine. Still, if the complex were voted down by residents, which is entirely possible, then the team's future in Arizona is almost certainly up in the air. Again...

In effect this act is the city council of Tempe failing to commit to the team and punting a decision on their future over to its residents. Your move, Tempe residents.
