Coyotes' new arena finally has a name and fans keep mocking them
It just doesn't stop for this franchise.
The Arizona Coyotes are going to be a punchline around the National Hockey League this season due to the fact that they'll be playing in a collegiate rink; they had played the previous 18 years at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. before complications with their lease on the arena as well as the city government necessitated their departure.
Of course, there was also the fact that the Coyotes were among the worst squads in hockey last season, and it certainly doesn't appear as though it will be getting better any time soon.
Earlier today, Arizona State University, with whom the Coyotes will be sharing with the men's ice hockey team, announced that their new rink will be referred to as "Mullet Arena".
Yes, really.
However, the name doesn't come from the classic 80's-era hairstyle, but was rather named for the Mullett family, who are supporters of the ASU hockey program and Sun Devil Athletics as a whole.
“The National Hockey League thanks Arizona State University for its support of the Coyotes during this transition period and for what will be just its latest major commitment to growing our game in the Valley,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a February news release about the agreement with ASU.
