Craig Berube leaves no doubt about who he blames for the team's recent slump.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off two consecutive losses in which the team has blown a third period lead, with a particularly ugly collapse against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night in which the Maple Leafs were largely dominated in the third period.
The frustration was evident on the face of head coach Craig Berube as he sat on the bench, and following the game Berube made it clear that his team's play late in games has been unacceptable. Speaking with members of the media, Berube specifically called out his leadership group for failing to lead by example at key moments during the game.
"It's been two games in a row at home where we come out and look flat," said Berube. "That's the bottom line for me. We should have been coming out and dictating how we are gonna play that period and where we wanted to play it and we didn't do it."
Berube looked exasperated as he called out his leadership core, running his hand over his face in frustration as he did so.
"I talked to the team after the game and our leaders gotta take control of it a lot more than they are right now, and to me it's all a mindset," said Berube. "Whether you're down a goal or up... you gotta have more urgency and be more direct on how we wanna play. We didn't do it in the third period two games in a row."
There's no doubt who Berube is referring to here with the team's core of captain Auston Matthews, forwards John Tavares and William Nylander and defenseman Morgan Rielly the clear leaders who have been with this organization for some time now. Whether or not those players will respond to being called out by their head coach remains to be seen however.
