Craig Berube shares his thoughts for the first time since the suspension was announced.
There are many who have been critical of the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety for not taking a harsher stance against the knee on knee hit from Anaheim Ducks captain Radko Gudas that ended the season of Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, and we can now safely add Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube to that list.
On Saturday, Berube spoke to the media for the first time since the suspension was officially announced and he made it clear that he felt Gudas got off with too light of a punishment under the circumstances.
"I think looking at it, we lose our guy, our captain, for the year it doesn't seem like enough for me," said Berube. "I'm not in a position to make those calls, it is what it is, but for me I would say it's not enough."
While Berube may have perhaps had more leniency towards a different player, he highlighted the fact that Gudas, as a repeat offender, likely should have faced a harsher punishment given his history of injuring players both in the National Hockey League and more recently at the Winter Olympic Games.
"To lose your star player, your captain, for the year and the guy doing it is a repeat offender, it just doesn't seem like enough," said Berube.
While Berube was critical of this particular decision, he refused to go any further and criticize how the NHL does, or does not, protect it's star players.
"I'm not gonna get into all that, I'm not in a position to talk about that at this point," said Berube. "They've got a job to do and for the most part they do a real good job, but obviously we're going to be upset about the suspension because it's our player."
