The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a decision that has left many of their fans scratching their heads.

On Saturday, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube announced that veteran forward Steven Lorentz would be slotting back into the lineup after recovering from an injury he suffered early in the regular season. The addition of Lorentz comes as little surprise given that he only lost his spot in the lineup due to injury, but it also means that a player currently in the lineup will have to step onto the sidelines to make room.

This is where the controversy comes into play.

When asked about the lineup change, Berube informed reporters that veteran forward Calle Jarnkrok would be coming out of the lineup despite the success he has had early in the season.

"Numbers game," said Berube when asked for an explanation.

The play of Jarnkrok has been a bright spot for the Maple Leafs to start the season with the 34 year old forward recording 3 goals through just 5 games so far this season. That is good enough to rank Jarnkrok 2nd in team scoring behind only Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, making the disbelief from fans all that much more understandable.

Here are just a few reactions to today's announcement:

There are already plenty who are questioning the decision from Craig Berube and it will be very interesting to see how the Maple Leafs respond to the lineup change later today when they face off against the Seattle Kraken. Should things not go the way of the Maple Leafs, I suspect the criticism of Berube's decision will only intensify.
