Craig Berube makes up his mind with fans eager to see Cowan on the ice.
The play of Easton Cowan is quickly turning into something of a storyline early in the 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In spite of the fact that Cowan has made the Maple Leafs roster this season he was held out of the season opener against the Montreal Canadiens and it is now confirmed that Cowan will sit for a second consecutive game with head coach Craig Berube electing to keep the same lineup as he had in the first game of the season.
On Saturday, Berube confirmed to reporters that Cowan would not be in the lineup and when he was asked why he was keeping the status quo he simply pointed out that it had worked for his team in that very first game of the season.
"The win and I just didn't feel there was any need to make a change tonight," said Berube to reporters on Saturday.
Cowan is of course a player that should be developing his skills at this stage of his career but it's hard to develop when you're not playing. Many have suggested moving Cowan down to the American Hockey League where he could get some ice time with the Toronto Marlies, but thus far he remains on the main roster and on the sidelines as a result.
Cowan has yet to make his NHL debut and you have to wonder how much longer that may remain the case with Craig Berube giving no indication that Cowan will be in his lineup any time soon.
Cowan is coming off of a 46 game season with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League, one in which he had 29 goals and 40 assists for a very impressive 69 points over that short stretch of play.
