Stunning comment from the Maple Leafs head coach on Saturday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs may not see goaltender Anthony Stolarz again, at least not out on the ice during a live game, for a very long time.
On Saturday, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube met with the media after the National Hockey League's holiday break, and it was during that media availability that Berube was asked to provide an update on the mystery injury that has kept Stolarz out since November 11th when he left a game against the Boston Bruins. Berube had very little to share except for the fact that he used a word that has sent panic through the Maple Leafs fan base.
"Not really," said Berube. "Indefinite as of right now."
It is that word, "indefinite," that has now become a major cause for concern. There has been a major fog of secrecy around the Stolarz injury and the fact that Berube now seems to be ruling out a return at any point in the near future only heightens the already high level of concern around this player.
The Maple Leafs have been forced to turn to Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby in Stolarz's absence but neither of them has risen to the level that Stolarz showed last season when he was considered a legitimate Vezina candidate with a 2.14 goals against average and a .926 save percentage over 34 regular season games. It seems that they will have to continue to rely heavily on both those goalies with the situation around Stolarz looking bleaker than it ever has before.
