The Toronto Maple Leafs are being forced to compete in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs without the use of their starting goaltender following a controversial incident in Game 1 of that very same series. The Maple Leafs have instead been forced to turn to backup goaltender Joseph Woll in their series against the Florida Panthers, with no clear answers yet about the injury to goaltender Anthony Stolarz.

On Saturday, following a tough loss in Game 3 at the hands of the Panthers, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube was asked about the health of Stolarz with Berube providing a relatively minor update on the status of his goaltender. The news was positive, but did not paint a clearer picture of when Stolarz might be back for the Maple Leafs.

"Progressing in the right direction," said Berube of Stolarz on Saturday.

While the words from the head coach had a positive tone to them, the reality of the situation might be considerably more troubling for the Maple Leafs. Berube also confirmed that Stolarz has yet to resume skating, a sign that he might still be a ways off from even being close to a potential return in this series.

Stolarz has been out of action since he was on the receiving end of a controversial blow to the head from Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett, a blow that did not result in a penalty at the time of the incident nor supplemental discipline from the NHL's Department of Player Safety after the fact.

Here is a look at the slow motion replay of that hit:

Given that Stolarz still seems to be a ways away, this could prove to be a pivotal and defining moment in this series.
