Is the unthinkable starting to feel… possible? According to comments made in the recent mailbag of the Edmonton Sun, there’s growing belief that Connor McDavid could eventually look for a way out of Edmonton if things don’t turn around in the postseason, and the idea is gaining traction.

A reader suggestion highlighted by journalist Gerry Moddejonge pointed to a scenario where the Oilers may need to act before it’s too late, rather than risk losing their franchise player for nothing at the end of his deal. While that may sound extreme, Moddejonge didn’t dismiss the possibility. In fact, he acknowledged that McDavid leaving to chase a Stanley Cup elsewhere isn’t out of the question.

For now, though, he does not believe the Oilers captain isn’t there yet. McDavid signed a two-year extension last fall, keeping him under contract through 2027-28, with the expectation that management would maintain a legitimate contender. But with Edmonton struggling and frustration beginning to show, the pressure is mounting fast.

While a trade request in the immediate future seems unlikely, the real turning point could come if the Oilers fail to improve. If the team takes another step back or stalls, McDavid could be forced to consider whether staying aligns with his ultimate goal: winning a Stanley Cup in his prime.

And here’s where it gets even bigger.

The summer of 2027 could reshape the entire NHL landscape. McDavid isn’t the only superstar in this position. Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews finds himself in a similar situation in Toronto, with both players under contract through 2027-28. If neither team takes the next step, the league could be staring at the possibility of two generational talents hitting the trade market at the same time.

For now, it’s just speculation with Edmonton staying competitive and in the playoff picture. But if the Oilers fail again, the noise around McDavid could turn into something much louder.
