A mixed reaction from fans after more details of DeBoer's new contract are revealed.
The New York Islanders made a very bold move on Sunday when first year general manager Mathieu Darche made the decision to fire head coach Patrick Roy with only 4 games remaining in the regular season.
Roy was quickly replaced by head coach Peter DeBoer who takes over behind a National Hockey League bench for the first time since his controversial comments about Jake Oettinger cost him his job with the Dallas Stars.
DeBoer is a highly respected head coach albeit one that has never won a Stanley Cup championship, and we now have a pretty good idea of how the Islanders managed to convince him to join their organization. According to a report from Andy Strickland, DeBoer's contract is a lengthy one with Darche and the Islanders effectively giving DeBoer a 5 year commitment.
DeBoer will finish off this current season, and will have 4 additional years remaining on his deal following this current season.
It's a risky move given that DeBoer has been known to wear out his welcome with players, especially when you consider that DeBoer has only ever spent more than 4 seasons with a single team only once during his entire NHL career.
Did the Islanders make the right move by making DeBoer an offer he couldn't refuse? Or have they given DeBoer far too much term given his coaching history? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
