Critical update given on Matthew Knies

The Toronto Maple Leafs not only lost on the scoreboard during last night's tilt against the Original 6 rival Boston Bruins, but also lost forward Matthew Knies to injury. 

He was shaken up after taking a hit  from Bruins captain Brad Marchand and immediately skated gingerly to the bench and did not return. 

However, the good news is that his ailment isn't serious, according to Leafs general manager Brad Treliving. 

"Matt is doing well," Treliving said. "I wasn’t with the team today, but I have been in touch with him. All signs are pointing to him doing really well. We will continue to see how things go throughout the day. I anticipate that he is going to be fine and available for tomorrow."

Treliving then disclosed that Knies actually wanted to return to the game, but was held out for precautionary reasons.

"It wasn’t necessarily a protocol, but we thought it was best to hold him out for precautionary reasons," Treliving said. "Matt wanted to play, but we thought we would hold him out for the rest of the game."

In the meantime, Knies has been sent to the American Hockey League affiliate Toronto Marlies in what was described as strictly a paper move. 

"Yeah, you always want to create as much flexibility down the stretch," Treliving explained. "You never know what will happen with injuries and all of the rest of it. Matthew is not going anywhere."
