One of the Hurricanes’ star players found a surprising offseason side hustle after hoisting the Stanley Cup…
The Carolina Hurricanes are still basking in the glow of their 2026 Stanley Cup victory, with players scattered across the continent enjoying their offseason. But one of their key contributors apparently found a creative way to stay busy during the summer months, and it has nothing to do with training.
Hurricanes forward Logan Stankoven was spotted listing hockey sticks for sale on Facebook Marketplace in his hometown of Kamloops, British Columbia. The listing, which was shared widely on social media after a local user stumbled across it, featured two "brand new" Warrior sticks, a QR7 and an Alpha LX3, each priced at $175 Canadian (roughly $125 USD).
The discovery was first highlighted on Instagram before being amplified by B/R Open Ice on X, where it quickly gained traction among hockey fans.
Stankoven just wrapped up his fourth NHL season in memorable fashion, posting 11 goals and five assists during the Hurricanes' championship playoff run. It was his second campaign in Carolina after arriving via a trade from the Dallas Stars at the 2025 deadline.
What makes the listing particularly amusing is the financial context. Last summer, Stankoven signed an eight-year contract extension worth $48 million, locking in an annual salary of $6 million starting with the 2026-27 season.
However, during the recently completed season, he was still playing under his entry-level deal worth $2.4 million over three years. NHL players only receive paychecks during the regular season, meaning the offseason can be a long stretch before the next deposit hits.
That said, the sticks he listed were reportedly priced at roughly half their typical retail value, making them a genuine bargain for any buyer lucky enough to spot the listing.
It is worth noting that professional hockey players frequently receive equipment from sponsors and manufacturers at no personal cost. So while Stankoven likely did not pay out of pocket for the sticks, flipping surplus gear for a quick return is hardly unusual.
Plenty of former players have shared cautionary stories about going broke despite earning millions, and many current pros reportedly live well below their means to avoid a similar fate.
But I’m sure Stankoven can afford to laugh off the attention. Once his new deal kicks in this fall, selling sticks on Marketplace will likely become a footnote rather than a necessity.
