The problems just keep on coming for the Ducks thanks to the Flyers offer sheet.
You know that somewhere Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere was smiling, and maybe even laughing, when he first caught wind of this news.
Although the report has not been officially confirmed, former National Hockey League defenseman Keith Yandle, who now stars as one of the three key figures on the Spittin Chiclets podcast, recently revealed on the shows most recent episode that the Flyers offer sheet for Anaheim Ducks star forward Leo Carlsson just caused another major headache in Anaheim.
According to Yandle, after Carlsson signed an offer sheet for a 5 year contract at an average annual value and cap hit of $18 million per season, Ducks forward Cutter Gauthier has decided that he will not be accepting a contract that comes in below Carlsson's new deal. That would be another player at a cap hit of $18 million per season for the Ducks, a nightmare scenario to say the least.
While Gauthier will likely struggle to get to that number as a restricted free agent with no real leverage, he can easily make his case from an on-ice point of view. This past season Gauthier scored far more goals, putting up 41 compared to just 29 from Carlsson, and also finished with more total points at 69 points on the season compared to just 67 from Carlsson.
It is true that two men are of different age, have a different contract status, and play different positions, but there's no denying that Gauthier has developed into an incredibly important player for the Ducks offensively.
Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek now finds himself in a truly nightmare scenario and he may have no one to blame but himself for allowing things to get this far.
