Rod Brind'Amour-Game-1-ECF-Post-Game-2026

Dark cloud hangs over Hurricanes as they approach Game 2.

The Hurricanes curse is once again rearing its ugly head.

The Carolina Hurricanes entered the Eastern Conference Final full of confidence after dispatching both the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers with 4 game sweeps, but after just 60 minutes of play it feels like that confidence has been shattered.

Gone is the narrative of the dominant Hurricanes rolling over teams in the Stanley Cup playoffs and that narrative has been replaced by an all too familiar one for the Hurricanes and their fans. I am of course referring to the curse that has seemingly haunted this team in the Eastern Conference Final for nearly 2 decades now.

We have to go all the way back to 2006 for the last time the Hurricanes won the Eastern Conference Final, and it hasn't been for a lack of visits. Since that last win the Hurricanes have recorded a frankly unbelievable record of 1-17 in Eastern Conference Final matchups, a statistic so hard to believe that you have to wonder if there isn't a genuine psychological factor at play here.

In fact that last time the Hurricanes won the Eastern Conference Final, the game winning goal was scored by their current head coach Rod Brind'Amour, who was still a player at the time. The Hurricanes would win that series 4-2 over the Buffalo Sabres and went on to win the Stanley Cup that year, but it's been all downhill from there.

In 2009 Brind'Amour was once again a player for the Hurricanes when they were swept at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins, with that series being the last Stanley Cup playoff series of Brind'Amour's playing career.

Since that time Brind'Amour has been behind the bench of the Hurricanes but unfortunately for him that has only resulted in the team producing similar results. The Hurricanes were swept by the Boston Bruins in the 2019 Eastern Conference Final and that was followed by another sweep 4 years later when they suffered the same fate at the hands of the Florida Panthers.

The Hurricanes only win over this stretch would come in 2025 against the Florida Panthers who needed just 5 games to advance that time, defeating the Hurricanes 4-1 in that series.

Of course the Hurricanes suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1, losing by a score of 6-2, and now that dark cloud has returned over the Hurricanes as they head into Game 2 and try to break a curse that does seem to be having a very real impact on this franchise.
