The Oilers defenseman is headed out as Edmonton moves on from a complicated contract situation.
The Edmonton Oilers have finally reached the end of one of the NHL offseason's longest-running trade sagas.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers are nearing a trade that will send defenseman Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks. While the final details of the deal are still being completed, Friedman reports that young defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin will be part of the return, and Edmonton will not retain any salary on Nurse’s contract.
"This is how things appear to be unfolding: Nurse to SJ. Shakir Mukhamadullin will be part the return. There will be no retention by the Oilers. We await the final picture," Friedman wrote.
The Oilers confirmed the full trade moments later as they acquired defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Darnell Nurse.
And yes, there is NO salary retention from the Oilers in this deal. Edmonton clears $9.25 million off the books and gets a 2020 first-round pick back in exchange.
The 31-year-old defenseman held all the leverage throughout the process thanks to his full no-trade clause, making any potential deal dependent on Nurse approving a destination. Earlier in the offseason, San Jose emerged as a team with interest, but the Sharks were not initially among the teams Nurse was willing to consider.
That changed when Nurse agreed to expand his trade list, reopening the door for a possible move, on Wednesday.
For Edmonton, moving Nurse clears one of the biggest financial commitments on the roster. The veteran carries a $9.25 million cap hit, a contract that limited the number of teams capable of making a deal work. The fact that the Oilers were able to move the entire contract without retaining salary could be a major victory for general manager Stan Bowman.
In return, Edmonton adds Mukhamadullin, a highly regarded young defenseman selected 20th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2020 NHL Draft. The 23-year-old blueliner brings size, mobility, and potential upside as the Oilers look to reshape their defensive group.
For San Jose, the move represents another step in the franchise’s transition from rebuilding to becoming a more competitive team. Nurse brings nearly 800 games of NHL experience, playoff battles, and leadership to a young Sharks roster.
