Tempers flared towards the end of the first period between the Edmonton Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, and as a result it wasn't long before we saw things turn ugly in this one.

The Oilers came out of the gate looking flat and allowed the Flyers to take an early 3-0 lead in the game's opening period, with the Oilers seemingly having no response. It was at that point, with a little over 4 minutes left to go in the period, that Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse attempted to light a spark under his teammates.

Nurse would drop the gloves with Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway who seemed more than eager to accept the challenge, although this one would quickly turn a little bizarre. As the two men jostled for position they began to rapidly spin each other around as if someone had just turned on the spin cycle. Both men continued to attempt to deliver offense but the result was wild winging punches as both men spun around wildly, with every blow appearing to miss by a mile.

Hathaway did seem to maintain better control of himself however and may have landed some relatively minor punches, but either way it is difficult to pick a winner in this one.

Here is a look at the replay of the relatively short exchange:
