Will Craig Berube be fired before Christmas?
The Toronto Maple Leafs are having their worst season in recent memory and calls for some type of change with the organization, whether it be a change to the roster, a coaching change, or even a change in management, are growing louder and louder by the day.
The public outcry has grown so loud in fact that there are now those who wonder if Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has reached the end of his rope, with some even suggesting that Berube should be fired over the holidays. Fans hoping to see that level of change in the immediate future are likely to be disappointed however, with National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger sharing his insight into the situation on Monday morning.
"Nobody is happy, they are clearly frustrated, and maybe, maybe, there is a call from above that says 'Ok change has to happen' but I don't get the sense early this morning that this is happening today," said Dreger on TSN's First Up.
While the current discourse around the Maple Leafs is certainly understandable, with the team dead last in the National Hockey League's Atlantic Division, it is also worth remembering that this team achieved their greatest level of success under Berube. Although most Leafs fans' won't look back fondly on their second round series loss to the Florida Panthers last season, it remains a fact that under Berube's guidance this team pushed the eventual Stanley Cup champions to 7 games.
Pointing the finger at the head coach may be the easiest solution in the short term but even the players may not believe that to be the source of the problem. According to Dreger, despite the appearance of a disconnect between Leafs captain Auston Matthews and Berube, the reality of the situation is quite different.
"I had a good conversation with somebody very close to Matthews on Friday who said 'No he likes Berube, he likes the coaching staff' they are just collectively as a team not getting it done," said Dreger.
While the Maple Leafs and general manager Brad Treliving may be holding firm for now, I do believe that patience is rapidly running out in the Toronto market.
