At the start of the month, whispers began circulating that David Kampf’s tenure in Toronto might be nearing its end. The veteran forward, who has yet to appear in a single NHL game for the Maple Leafs this season, has grown increasingly frustrated with his situation and it’s hard to blame him.

Despite being fully capable of playing at the NHL level, Kampf has been stuck in the American Hockey League due to salary cap constraints on Toronto’s roster. On Thursday, it was confirmed that Kampf has been suspended without pay by the Maple Leafs for leaving their AHL team. Therefore the Leafs are not currently incurring the $1.25M buried Cap Charge for him while in the minors.

According to Elliotte Friedman, Kampf is prepared to take another drastic measures to change his circumstances.

“I’ve heard there is pushback to terminating his contract. We’ll see how things play out. But he remains on leave from AHL Toronto, and it was clear his heart wasn’t in it,” Friedman wrote in his latest 32 Thoughts column on Sportsnet.

The situation has clearly reached a boiling point. Contract termination would be a risky move for Kampf: he would be giving up roughly $4 million in remaining salary from his four-year deal, which carries a $2.4 million cap hit per season. With one year remaining beyond this season, such a decision would require a major personal sacrifice.

Still, the bottom line is simple: Kampf wants to play. And everyone in the hockey world seems to understand that.

Talk has swirled around the Maple Leafs potentially orchestrating a trade to clear cap space and return Kampf to the NHL roster. But with patience running thin, it appears the forward may no longer be willing to wait for management to find a solution.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Toronto to see how this high-stakes situation unfolds and whether Kampf’s next move will be a calculated risk or a bold declaration that he’s done waiting.
