David Kampf's time in Toronto is coming to an end... one way or another.
The situation surrounding Toronto Maple Leafs veteran forward David Kampf has been an ugly one to be sure. Kampf, who is clearly a player who plays at a level that warrants a spot in the National Hockey League, has been something of a cap casualty with the Maple Leafs unable to make room for him on their main roster.
This is thanks in large part to Kampf's contract, a 4 year deal with an average annual value of $2.4 million, which sees him making a pretty penny for a player that is expected to slot in on the fourth line. Making things even more complicated is that Kampf also has another year beyond this season remaining on his deal, making trading him somewhat complicated from the perspective of the Maple Leafs.
Now however it seems all but inevitable that Kampf's time in Toronto will come to an end, one way or another, with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman sharing his insight on what is going on with the veteran forward.
"The Toronto Marlies are playing tonight and [Kampf] is not with them," revealed Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. "I was told there's a possibility he could play tomorrow but I think that's unlikely."
Friedman would continue to elaborate on the Kampf situation and even went so far as to imply that Kampf could be seriously contemplating terminating his current deal with the Leafs in order to play elsewhere.
"David Kampf is taking a couple of days to think about his future," said Friedman. "He got a little bit frustrated and I think everybody understands he wants to play in the NHL. One of the things that has been rumored the past couple of days, there's been a couple of players who walked and terminated their contracts so they could get back to the NHL and get in better situations in the NHL. I'm not sure that's going to happen but there's no question that he's taking some time this weekend to think about his future."
That would be a huge decision on the part of Kampf who would be giving up millions of dollars that remain to be paid on his Maple Leafs contract, but it is one that Friedman is clearly implying is being considered as an option.
"We'll see if the Maple Leafs can find a move for him this weekend or what next week brings him," concluded Friedman.
It seems like David Kampf's time with the Maple Leafs is about to be over.
