On this day in Penguins history, the Pens' honoured possibly the greatest player to ever play the game in Mario Lemieux.The Penguins retired Mario Lemieux's No. 66 after "The Magnificent One" announces his retirement from the NHL following a prolonged battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma. On Nov. 17, 1997, Lemieux was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, becoming the ninth player in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived. Two days later the Penguins hoisted his #66 to the rafters. Lemieux briefly returned to the game in 2000. He retired again in 2006 with 690 goals and 1,033 assists in 915 games, good for a career average of 1.88 points per game.
