It is hard to put into words just how much the perception around Dallas Stars head coach Peter DeBoer has shifted since Game 5 of the Western Conference Final.

DeBoer, a coach who has always had a reputation for being hard on his goaltenders, made the stunning decision to pull Stars number one netminder Jake Oettinger in what would prove to be the final and deciding game of the Western Conference Final, doing so in rather dramatic fashion.

It was a moment that ignited a firestorm on social media as it was transpiring before our very eyes and DeBoer's comments after the game would only pour more gasoline onto a raging fire of controversy.

"The reality is, if you go back to last year's playoffs, he's lost 6 of 7 games to Edmonton and we gave up 2 shots on 2 goals in an elimination game," said DeBoer of Oettinger following the game.

Many viewed the comments as DeBoer throwing his star goaltender under the bus, because that is exactly what he was doing, a questionable decision when you consider that Oettinger has a massive 8 year contract with the Stars that will kick in next season. DeBoer had seemingly only managed to make the situation worse with his comments, something he would do again on the Saturday that followed Game 5.

DeBoer spoke to reporters during the Stars' end of season media availability on Saturday and admitted openly that he had not reached out to Oettinger following the controversial decision to pull him in Game 5 and the even more controversial comments that followed.

"No one is a bigger fan of Jake Oettinger than me, as a person and as a coach," said DeBoer on Saturday.

DeBoer also added that, despite not having spoken to Oettinger since the debacle in Game 5 and what followed, he has no concerns about his relationship with Oettinger moving forward.

Whether or not Oettinger will feel the same way remains to be seen.
