Newly announced Team Canada defenseman made a comment that caught everyone off guard after the roster reveal.
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews has a major life event to focus on this February: his wife Kerry is expecting their fourth child. The couple is gearing up for a February arrival, and Toews has made it clear that family comes first.
Although he was recently named to Team Canada’s men’s hockey roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, Toews says he hasn’t spoken to Hockey Canada about missing the tournament, he simply didn’t feel the need because he felt he might not make the cut this time around.
He maintains that his priority is being there for his wife and the birth of their child, per team insider Corey Masisak.
It’s a rare reminder that even elite athletes face real-life decisions off the ice. For Toews, this means choosing a milestone moment in his family’s life over representing his country on the Olympic stage.
But I bet he hopes that his wife delievers a healthy child before it’s time to leave for the International competition.
Which is why Masisak added to his report later on Wednesday, saying that a team spokesman said Devon’s wife is due on Feb. 2. If the baby is a little late, he might be late to join Canada in Milan.
If it’s later on or too close to the tournament, there are already names out there for who can come in on the reserve list.
Fans will be watching closely to see how Team Canada adjusts to the potential absence of one of their top defensemen, but for now, Devon Toews’ focus is firmly at home.
