THIS JUST IN
Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill announced on Wednesday that forward Denis Gurianov has been granted an indefinite leave of absence from the team due to family reasons.
“The team will have no further comment at this time,” they put out in the statement.
As soon as the team made the announcement, fans and pundits started to wonder if Gurianov, who was born in Tolyatti, Russia, could have been mobilized and ordered to return home for the army, hence protecting his family from backlash if he does not comply.
However, sometimes, NHL players ask for a personal leave of absence when they struggle with grief or unexpected medical scare. Just recently Vegas Golden Knights star defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was away from the team, taking a nine-game absence as he joined his family to tend to his 4-year-old daughter’s frightening health scare.
While we do not wish that Gurianov is facing a similar personal issue, we do hope that he is not forced to represent the Russian army as well.
In 25 games this season with Dallas, the 25-year-old winger, who was selected in the first round, 12th overall by the Stars in 2015, has collected two goals and five points.
While we don’t expect further details at the moment in what’s happening, we wish Gurianov all the best during his leave of absence.
