Very bad news for the NHL star who was injured by Tom Wilson at the Olympics.
The National Hockey League has been hesitant to send players to the Winter Olympic Games in recent years and, although there are a number of reasons behind this decision, one of the reasons has been injury concerns.
This week we were given a perfect example of just that when a collision between a pair of NHL stars resulted in an injury. During Friday's clash between Canada and Switzerland, Los Angeles Kings star forward Kevin Fiala was injured while representing his home country of Switzerland. Ironically it would be another NHL star in Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson who would cause the injury to Fiala when he delivered what looked like a low-impact hit to the Kings forward.
The hit itself wasn't the biggest blow you're ever going to see but, unfortunately for both Fiala and Wilson, as Wilson followed through with the hit he fell awkwardly down onto Fiala's extended leg. Fiala appeared to be in serious pain on the ice and he was unable to leave under his own power, with a stretcher eventually being brought out to carry Fiala off the ice.
Fiala would eventually be taken to hospital as a result of the injury, and we now know things are pretty serious.
Unfortunately the update is even worse, with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman sharing some devastating news regarding Fiala on Saturday morning. According to Friedman, Fiala will now miss the entire Olympic tournament and the remainder of the NHL season as a result of this injury, suggesting a major injury has occurred here.
