During the 2022-23 season, it was announced that Maple Leafs first round pick Rodion Amirov had left Toronto to get back home to Russia to be with his family amidst the treatment for a brain tumor. He underwent chemotherapy treatments for months and was fighting for his life with his loved one.
While he remains focused on his health, fans were hoping to see him back on the ice, doing what he loves most. However, according to Kyle Cushman of the Score, it appears that Amirov’s career in professional hockey is over…
“Amirov extended his loan with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in May, but there’s been no legitimate indication that he’ll return to play.
"The loan is so Amirov can remain in Russia, have access to Ufa’s staff, and be around the team. With what’s public, it’s unlikely he plays again.”
His hockey career was put on hold, and now it may be over. This is just so devastating for the 21-year-old forward who has shown flashes of elite NHL-level skill. He played just 10 games for Salavat Yulaev Ufa of the KHL last season, putting up one goal and three points.
Amirov was selected 15th overall by Toronto back in 2020 and was projected to be an NHL goal scorer. But the sad reality is that he’s had too much time of development taken away from him and his body has been put through the extreme rigors of chemotherapy treatment…
Life is bigger than hockey. We wish Amirov all the best. The important thing is his health.
